Gen 5 Rav4 security systems 2019-2025
The 5th generation RAV4 (XA50) is another vehicle that lacks an alarm. All versions of the RAV4 come with a factory transponder immobiliser as standard, and all models apart from the entry-level GX have Smart-Key proximity entry.
Toyota RAV4 alarm recommendations

Back in 2019, soon after the Rav4 was released, I got my hands on one and helped with developing an alarm solution. This involved mapping the data for the CAN-BUS alarm and writing up installation notes.
The Cobra AK4615 was the alarm of choice back then and it worked using the factory Toyota remote or smart locking, depending on trim level.
Vodafone Automotive 4822 has superseded the AK4615 and is now my recommendation.

The video shows a 2024 Rav4 GX (base spec model) which I installed a 4822 alarm into.
Window open detection
One of the cool features of the alarm is that it knows if a window has been left open. This is information that the alarm reads from the CAN-BUS that would not be possible with an older style PLIP alarm.
When the alarm is armed it will report that the window is open with 3 beeps of the siren. It will then turn off the ultrasonic internal movement sensors to prevent a false alarm.
CAN injection protection
The Rav4 is known to be vulnerable to CAN injection attacks as first reported by DR.Ken Tindell in 2022.
The ultimate version of the 4822 CAN-BUS upgrade alarm protects against this attack by remaining armed and keeping the car immobilised should such an attack happen.

Gen 4 2013-2018
The 4th Generation Rav4 received a clean new look for the fourth generation model (XA40) getting a facelift late in 2015.
In March 2016, I finally got my hands on one, so thought it would be a good time to explain what alarm options are available.
Currently, there are 3 different models levels in NZ, all of which have an immobiliser, but none in the current (post facelift) line up come with an alarm.
It’s worth noting that the pre facelift (2013-2015) Limited and GLX RAV4 (XA40) models both had a factory alarm, but the facelift versions no longer have one as an option.

RAV4 trim levels
The top of the line Limited and GLX models both come with the Toyota proximity smart-key entry and push-button start.
Then there is GL which has a traditional remote key.
Here are my recommendations if you want a flawless alarm with that factory feel.

CAN-BUS upgrade alarm for GLX & Limited
For the GLX and Limited models, the Cobra AK4615 4822 CAN-BUS upgrade alarm is great. It works flawlessly with the Smart Key set up.
The AK4615 (now replaced by the 4822 Enhanced) has ultrasonic internal protection and a super loud digital backup siren and horn honk.
GL upgrade alarm
For the GL model, the Cobra AK4218 Toyota alarm works with the factory remote key and gives you the option of disabling the ultrasonic sensors using the remote. * No longer available, but the 4822 is now a good option.

Gen 3 RAV4 2006-2012
The XA30 model came with a factory immobiliser and remote keyless entry (No smart Key with NZ models) Both the Cobra AK4218 and AK4615 are recommended if you wish to use the factory remote. *2025 update 4822 now recommended.
Again, other alarms are possible but these are my recommendations if you want that factory look and quality.
I’ve done a Viper 5906V remote start alarm on this generation Rav4 too.

Gen 2 RAV4 2001-2005
The Gen 2 RAV4 came with remote locking, but no CAN-BUS on the body electrics. A PLIP upgrade alarm is a good option if you wish to continue using the factory remote control.
Most models lack an immobiliser.

Gen 1 RAV4 1994-2000
The first generation RAV4 came with central locking and not much else. It lacked remote keyless entry or even an immobiliser.
Recommendations
Install an immobiliser or a remote alarm/immobiliser.
