Factory immobiliser – Which models have one?
Smart key & push-button start models – These come with a factory immobiliser.
Base models with a traditional remote key – These may not have an immobiliser.
How to check – Look for a flashing padlock symbol on the instrument cluster when the key is out of the ignition.

Why the Toyota Aqua tops the most-stolen car list
The Aqua is a favourite target for thieves. One reason is the small front quarter window, located behind the wing mirror. Thieves smash this window to gain entry:
It’s discreet and often goes unnoticed, even after the car is stolen.
This makes it easier for thieves to take the vehicle without drawing attention, especially for joyrides.
- This post explains how cars without factory immobilisers are being stolen.
Toyota Prius C security

Common theft method
Smash the small front quarter window.
Enter the car without setting off any alarm (since there isn’t one from factory).
Break the steering column shroud and ignition barrel to start the car.
Toyota Aqua security recommendations
If no factory immobiliser – Install an immobiliser as a minimum level of protection.
No factory alarm – All Toyota Aqua models and the Toyota Prius C lack an alarm. It’s work considering one on top of an immobiliser.

Why I recommend getting an alarm
I strongly recommend fitting an alarm to your Aqua, even if your model already has an immobiliser. Many thieves don’t realise the car is immobilised, so they still smash a window, break in, and cause extensive damage to the steering column in a failed attempt to steal it.
A clearly visible alarm LED is often enough to deter all but the most determined criminals. But if someone does try their luck, the siren will sound making it far too risky for them to continue and helping prevent further damage to your vehicle.
Aqua Tops of the most stolen car list
According to IAG data the Toyota Aqua was the most stolen car in 2024.
Now I’m going to pedantic here and point out that these numbers are only insurance claims data. The NZ Police stolen car list will give a more accurate account as it covers all reported stolen vehicles. Not just those insured by IAG. Doing my own number crunching in 2025 I had the Toyota Aqua at number 12 in the “Most Stolen Vehicle List”.
Insurance benefits
Insurance costs a rising for the Toyota Aqua due to the theft risk
Some insurance companies insist that you get an immobiliser or an alarm. It’s a no brainer as it helps prevent the vehicle being stolen along with the hassle of making a claim.

Securing a Toyota Aqua usually takes:
Around 2 hours for a quality immobiliser installation
3–5 hours for a full alarm system
Security systems I recommend for the Toyota Aqua
For the best protection, I recommend the Vodafone Automotive 4822 CAN-BUS upgrade alarm that works with the factory remote. It has a built in level sensor and comes in 3 levels of security.
If you only have one Toyota remote then I can add a 2-button padlock remote.
The 4824 immobiliser is a great option for the Aqua and can also work as a basic CAN-BUS alarm.

Security window stickers
Placing car security stickers in the front quarter windows is a good idea as these are often the windows that get smashed for access.

If you require an upgrade alarm then please let me know how many Toyota remote keys your Aqua has. This way I can quote for an additional remote control if needed.
