Car Alarms Explained
Remote or Hybrid Alarm?
A remote alarm comes with it’s own remote controls. They fall into 3 categories:
- Remote Alarms
- Remote Alarm/Immobilisers
- Hybrid of CAN-BUS / PLIP Remote Alarm
Does your vehicle have a factory car alarm?
Do not make the assumption that having a factory keyless entry system means that you have an alarm.
The video shows how to test if your car has an alarm.
Even if your vehicle has an OEM alarm I would suggest finding out how effective it is. Often factory car alarms are easy to defeat, plus many vehicles lack internal motion sensors.
This can be important if you keep contents in the vehicle, especially if your vehicle is an obvious theft target such as a van or a trade vehicle.

Why should you choose Obsessive Vehicle Security?

Car Alarms - Things to consider
Quality Installation
A great alarm installation starts by asking the right questions:
- What vehicle is it for?
- Do you need an alarm with remote locking or one that integrates with the factory keyless system?
- Is there already a factory immobiliser?
- Are there contents in the vehicle that need protecting?
- What is your budget?
How secure is your remote from cloning?
Is remote coding PIN Code protected?
- Autowatch and Vodafone Automotive alarms require a PIN code to program a new remote.
- Some Viper alarms can have remote coding locked when installed.
- Mongoose, AVS & Cyclops alarms have no PIN code protection.
- Some OEM remotes can be compromised with the right tools.
Which sirens are effective?
If the siren has an over-ride key it’s pointless!
- A good siren should be hard to access and defeat.
- What happens if the siren gets wet? Does it have an IP rating?
- Will the battery backup in the siren still work in 2 years time?
- Is a standard none battery siren better value?
- Can the vehicle horn be used?
What about alarm sensors?
Will your alarm be a nuisance?
- Rusty bonnet switches cause false alarms, or don’t work at all.
- Impact sensors can cry wolf.
- Glass break sensors don’t work well with window tint film?
- This page explains how sensors work and help you make a good decision.
Will the alarm be well hidden?
How much does your installer care?
- It takes knowledge, time, and skill to install an alarm to a high standard.
- Is the installer willing to discuss where the alarm is hidden?
- Will the cables be dressed to look like a factory loom?
- Is the alarm small enough to be hidden effectively?
Can the factory alarm be upgraded?
Are you sure if you have a factory alarm?
- Will the alarm sound if the lock is picked?
- Does the alarm have any internal sensors?
- What vulnerabilities does the OEM system have ?
- Can extra sensors be added?
Watch out for fake or expired car alarm standards
I recommend avoiding dishonest car alarm wholesalers and retailers. If they pretend not to know about the current lack of standards then they are incompetent.
Don’t settle for outdated car alarms from AVS or Mongoose. The 5 Star Rating System died in 2012. NZ/AUS standards being quoted by them are misleading. They expired years ago!
