A remote double tap module is a custom made circuit designed to make factory central locking systems more versatile.
Why did I invent the remote double tap module?
One of the most restrictive aspects of factory remote locking systems is their lack of auxiliary options. Wouldn’t it be convenient if your existing car remote could control additional functions with a simple double-press of a button?
I’ve developed an elegant solution that works with most vehicles: the Remote Double Tap Module. This device activates secondary functions by detecting when you press the lock or unlock button twice within 3 seconds.
Basically it is a timer with some relays housed in a plastic box. Each one get custom built depending on what it is going to be used for.
Real-World Usage
I’ve already equipped the Obsessive Van with this system. A double-tap of the lock button activates a boot release actuator that pops open the charger door, simultaneously triggering a 3-minute timer module that illuminates LEDs for improved nighttime visibility. Double-tapping the unlock button turns on the headlamps for 30 seconds—perfect when approaching the vehicle in darkness.
Creative car security solutions
The applications extend far beyond my own setup. I have installed a double tap module on a new SR-5 Toyota Hilux to create a selective unlocking system for the canopy. The second unlock press not only unlocks the canopy door but also sends a command preventing the vehicle from auto re-locking. This eliminates the frustrating scenario where the vehicle re-locks after 30 seconds (when main doors haven’t been opened), re-arms the alarm, and triggers false alarms from PIR movement sensors.
