NZSA Star Rating System: Why is it still being used in 2025?

NZSA star rating. Not fit for purpose

Back in April 2012 the New Zealand Security Associations failed “star rating system” for car security products was abandoned.

However the NZSA seem to have forgotten to inform anyone about the decision.

NZSA Star Rating – Void but still in use?

The New Zealand Security Association Website (Note: Has now been updated as of October 2014) claims that the “NZSA Star rating system” is now controlled by the Motor Trade Association, however the MTA website makes no mention of a star rating system at all. In fact the last time I approached the MTA they indicated that there was not enough interest from installers to take it on!

I must also point out that the NZSA only got around to changing the vehicle security link on it’s home page in late April after I emailed them asking why the NZSA was still promoting the star rating system.

Not Really Professionalising the Security Industry

You may have heard the NZSA radio advert claiming to be “Professionalising the security industry”. However, going on past experiences of dealing with the NZSA, I find such claims to be completely false and highly misleading.

Personally, I would not trust the NZSA to fold the wings of a paper airplane, let alone be responsible for over seeing any form of security whatsoever!

False NZSA Membership Claims

There are large number of companies selling car security that claim to be NZSA members. Yet they are not listed on the NZSA website.

I have informed the NZSA about this yet they have not taken any action.

Impotent or Inept?

For legal reasons, I’m not going to speak on behalf of the NZSA, but I can’t think of any other reasons why they do not take action against false membership claims.

Misleading claims

I suggest avoiding any car security companies displaying the NZSA logo on their website or shop signage.

Update 2025

I know of 2 Wellington based companies still displaying the NZSA logo on their website!
