Nissan NV200 Security Guide

Nissan Car Alarms

The Nissan NV200 security system is one that I recommend upgrading if you own one. The NV200 is also known as a Vanette and has been in production since 2009.

Nissan New Zealand did not sell the NV200 so all of the models on the road here are Japanese imports.

What security does the NV200 come with?

No alarm or immobiliser

The NV200 Vanette comes with remote central locking. If you’re lucky then you’ll have 2 remote keys.

It does not have an immobiliser let alone an alarm which makes it very vulnerable to theft.

I recommend getting an immobiliser as a minimum level of protection.

Even the updated 2025 models don’t come with an immobiliser. It is one of the few new vehicles that lacks any security

Upgrading the remote central locking

There is space in the Nissan remote key to place a transponder chip.

This means that a Cyclops P205 transponder immobiliser with a chip placed in the key is clean simple solution. A tag can be added if you have a plain metal key like the one shown in the photo.

Recommended upgrade alarms for the NV200

If you use your van as a work vehicle and keep valuables inside then getting a good upgrade alarm is a must.

Most alarms can be made to work in the NV200, but if you want more then just door, boot and bonnet protection I recommend one with ultrasonic internal movement sensors.

The 4822 Enhanced  CAN-BUS upgrade comes with ultrasonic internal motion sensors, along with a tilt sensors as standard. It works with the factory remote, plus can have a 2 button padlock remote added if the van only has the one remote key.

Fully electric van

The  e-NV200 was the first fully electric vehicle that I got to work on. In fact I purchased one back in 2016 as my work van so know it very well.

What security does the e-NV200 come with?

The Nissan e-NV200 comes with a reasonable amount of security as standard. It has proximity smart keys, and a factory immobiliser with push to start ignition.

What it does not have is an alarm system.

UK spec panel van vs Jap import

Imports from the UK are generally the panel van version of the e-NV200. These have a solid partition between the cabin and the load area.

All of the Japanese imports come as a minibus so there is no partition and glass in all of the back doors.

The biggest issue I had with the van was how the charge port opened (yes I know I’m pedantic!). It comes with a mechanical bonnet type pull-lever inside the cabin which I felt was a tad crude. After finding out that the Gen 2 Nissan Leaf could open with the remote I decided that the van needed this too.

Overcoming the limitations of the factory remote locking

The challenge was how to make it work using the factory remote. I’ve not come across any systems that can do this before. After spending too much time searching I gave up and decided to design my own circuit.

I call it the Remote Double Tap Module as it will activate the second output if the lock button is pressed twice within 3 seconds. On the van, it also activates a timer to turn a LED strip on for 3 minutes so I can see the charging port which helps when plugging it in at night time 🙂

CAN-BUS alarm recommended for the e-NV200

Ultrasonic sensors in the e-NV200

For my personal van I went with the Cobra AK4615 CAN-BUS upgrade alarm. This alarm has now been superseded with the 4822.

The factory remote has a fan button. This turns on the cabin heater and demists the windows if held down for two seconds. Obviously having air movement in the cabin is not good if you have ultrasonic sensors.

Fortunately, the AK4615 can be programmed to turn them down to 50% when the fan turns on. This means the alarm can remain armed whilst the van is defrosting.

The e-NV200 even has heated seats and steering wheel which is super luxurious for a van.

PIR sensor to protect the load area

As my van was the UK panel van it had the partition so I added a PIR sensor to protect the load area

Window Closure and Venting

Next came automatic window closure. I added a Viper 535T module which automatically closes the windows when the alarm arms. It makes the windows fully automatic, so a single press will fully open or close the passenger window.

The 535T vent feature is super useful too. Venting simply opens both windows by a pre-programmed level. I’ve wired mine up to work from a double-tap of the unlock button on the dash. This will only work when the accessory circuit is on so it does not compromise the security.

Obsessive Vehicle Security work van

The e-NV200 served me well for 8 years 2016 -2024. I sold it when road user charges and the need for fast charging no longer made it as economical to use.

It was replaced by my Honda Vezel which also had the factory security upgraded.

You can find more information on the NV200 and e-NV200 on the Wikipedia page.
