Mongoose MAP77 Versus AVS C5 – CAN-BUS Alarm Reviews

Mongoose MAP77 v AVS C5
Mongoose MAP77 "4 Star Rating"

How does the Mongoose MAP77 compare to the AVS C5?

Back in 2014, I reviewed the AVS C5 CAN-BUS alarm and discovered it was a re-branded Tytan DS410.

It only took a quick glance at the Mongoose MAP77 to recognise that it too is a re-branded Tytan alarm.

Dodgy star ratings

The Mongoose has a self-awarded 4 star rating compared to the AVS C5 which has a self-awarded 5-star rating.

For anyone who does not know any better, the star rating implies that the alarms have been independently tested and perform well. For example, think about the NCAP safety ratings.  The truth is that the AVS and Mongoose ratings are nothing more then bullshit marketing.

The ratings would be more realistic if they were a out of 10. So 4/10 and 5/10 respectively, but even then it feels a little generous.

Both alarms are imported and re-branded by Import Distribution Limited, who trade under the name Formula.

What are the differences between the MAP77 and the C5?

Despite being the same alarm module, there are some differences.

The Mongoose MAP77 has had the ultrasonic sensors removed and comes with a standard siren as opposed to a battery back-up siren.

The AVS C5 has an added tilt sensor.

Tytan DS410

AVS C Series Alarm Review
TYTAN DS410

The Tytan DS410 both reads and writes to the vehicle CAN-BUS.

Depending on the vehicle firmware, the DS410 sends data to flash the lights, lock the doors, and roll up the windows.

If you compare this to the Vodafone Automotive 4822, it only reads the data. All output are analog, which avoids any potential disputes should an error occur with the CAN-BUS.

Whilst reading CAN-BUS data is harmless, most vehicle manufactures do not like after-market products sending CAN packets to the vehicle. If an issue develops with the vehicle, then they will often point the finger at the “None OEM part” and rightly or wrongly claim that this can void the vehicle warranty.

The DS410 PDF has more details than either Mongoose or AVS provide.

The previous generation CAN-BUS alarm from Mongoose was also a rebranded system from Tytan.

The MAP70 was a Tytan DS400.
