The Mazda Demio has consistently ranked among the top 10 most stolen cars in New Zealand for the past decade. Imported primarily from Japan, the Demio is essentially the twin of the locally sold Mazda 2. However, unlike the Mazda 2, the Japanese-imported Demio is notoriously vulnerable to theft.
Most older models are almost completely lacking in modern factory security features such as an immobiliser or an alarm system, making them an easy target for opportunistic thieves.

Mazda Demio Immobiliser? – How to check
One of the simplest ways to tell if your Demio is fitted with a factory transponder immobiliser is to look for the immobiliser warning light on the dashboard.
Step 1: Check the instrument cluster (dashboard lights).
Step 2: Look for the immobiliser symbol (usually a small flashing padlock or key icon).
Step 3: If your Demio has an immobiliser, this light will flash when the key is not in the ignition.
On all Generation 3 Mazda Demios (DE models, 2007–2014) the cluster has a space for the immobiliser light. Even cars without an immobiliser will still have the symbol there — but it will never flash. If you look closely, you can see the outline of the icon, but it remains unlit.
Mazda Demio car alarm & immobiliser options
If your Mazda Demio does not already have a factory immobiliser, it’s highly recommended to install one.
The Cobra 8510 is the easiest and most affordable option for most owners.
It could be worth considering an alarm with an immobiliser.
Remote upgrade alarm systems
There are several alarm upgrade options for the Demio, and the best choice depends on your specific setup. For an accurate recommendation, please [contact me] with the following details:
Year of your Demio
Whether or not the car already has a factory immobiliser
How many Mazda remote controls you currently have, and whether you want to keep using them or switch to a system with its own remote controls

CAN-BUS upgrade alarm (Works with the factory remote)
There is not dedicated signal in the CAN-BUS data to show that the Mazda Demio has been locked or unlocked via the remote. The CAN-BUS alarm system is programmed to monitor the central locking and hazard lights to arm and disarm. This is similar to many Nissan models.
Cheat Code: Mazda Demio car alarm vulnerability
A manual lock/unlock combined with the hazard light switch being pressed produces the same data as a remote lock/unlock. This means that some CAN-BUS alarms with sloppy firmware can be tricked into disarming.
Because of this, the only CAN-BUS alarm I recommend for the Demio is the Vodafone Automotive 4822, which is specifically designed to protect against this vulnerability.

Additional benefits of the Vodafone Automotive 4822:
Works with the factory Mazda remote
- Crank Immobiliser
Can be upgraded with an additional remote — a great option if you only have one factory remote key and a non-remote key (often cheaper than buying a new remote key from the dealer).
- Integrates with horn to ensure the alarm gets noticed if someone attempts a break-in.
Affordable option range. You can pick which package suits your needs.
Optional ultrasonic sensors to protect the cabin.
Optional wireless siren that can be hidden for extra security.
