I’ve compiled some of the most frequently asked questions about car alarm installation costs. Whilst I can’t speak for other installers, I can give you my recommendations.
Here is a solid guide, regardless of where you live in New Zealand
- Avoid companies that offer free installation. No one works for free – there is always a catch!
- If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
- Question false claims about car alarms being 4, or 5 star rated – these standards expired in 2012.

How much does it cost to install a car alarm?

How much should you pay to get a car alarm installed in NZ?
- Expect to pay about $450.00 for a basic car alarm.
- $850.00 will get you a mid-range alarm system.
- A high-tech car alarm can be as much as $1250.00, but you can spend more if you add extras.
- The price varies depending on which alarm is suitable for your vehicle, along with what security requirements you have.
- If you are looking to add accessories and extra features, then budget for more.
How much does it cost for installation only?
- I only install car alarm systems that I sell and recommend.
- If you’ve purchased a car alarm elsewhere, then get them to install it for you.
- If they don’t provide an installation service, then avoid them. They don’t run a legitimate vehicle security business.
Why deal with the same business for both supply and installation?
- They will be familiar with the car alarm systems that they deal with on a regular basis.
- There should be no disputes about the product or installation if something does not work. In other words, it’s simple to fix should there be a warranty issue.
- You are helping to weed out box sellers who I have very little respect for. They have no passion for cars, let alone any technical knowledge and skills.
- You should get better service.
Get a solid quote for your car alarm installation
- All of my prices include installation and GST. There are no hidden extras.
- Expect upfront pricing – I tell you what parts are needed before starting the installation and build them into the quote.
Do alarms for European cars cost more?
- No – Whilst pricing can vary between vehicles (even for the same model of alarm), where the vehicle comes from should not be a factor.
- Pricing is decided on what parts are required and how long the installation should take.
Does mobile car alarm installation cost more?
No – I charge the same price for car alarm installs at my workshop as I do if I am coming to you.
Installation & Service Questions
Can I install my own car alarm?
- If you are competent with vehicle electrics, there is nothing stopping you from installing your own alarm.
- Note: I don’t supply car alarms without installation, so you’ll need to look elsewhere if you wish to do this.
How long does a car alarm take to install?
- Typically 3 to 6 hours, but it really depends on what vehicle you own and what alarm system is being installed. It’s not uncommon for me tp spend 2 days on an alarm installation.
- If it is going to be over a days work, then I’ll ask you to drop the car off with me and collect it the next day.
Are there additional costs to installing alarms into new vehicles?
- No – If the vehicle is new and needs some development work, I generally don’t charge more, especially if it’s going to be a popular model.
- Note: I will need more time with the vehicle.
Practical Concerns
Can car alarms be transferred to a new vehicle?
- That depends if the alarm is suitable for the new vehicle – if so, then yes it can.
- When removing an alarm, holes for sensors and LEDs may be left exposed.
Will getting a car alarm installed void the vehicle warranty?
- No, I install alarms for many car dealers and have never had an issue.
- The warranty can’t be voided because you’ve added an accessory: You should be covered under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.
- If you have any doubts, check with the dealership and get it in writing before going ahead.
- The warranty is between you and the car dealership.
