The 500RLi is a Motorcycle alarm with dual immobiliser from Autowatch. It features a 109 dB siren (not battery back-up).

The immobiliser self-arms 30 seconds after the ignition is turned off. The alarm has a built-in impact/tilt sensor to protect the bike from being tampered with or moved.

It comes with two 1 button peanut remote controls which it must be noted are not waterproof! Whilst these remote controls are good for use with cars I have my reservations about using one with a bike, especially if you’re more then just a fair weather rider.

It’s a compact design which makes it small enough to fit in most bikes. If you look at other websites many list it as having an “Attack proof housing”. Personally, I find this to be misleading as there are simply 4 screws holding the case together!

  • H: 100mm (plus loom exit – allow 120mm )
  • W: 60mm
  • D: 33mm

Sleep mode

If the bike has not been used for a few days (I quote the term “a few days” from the Autowatch manual which is not very specific about how long it takes!) the alarm will go into sleep mode. This reduces the current the alarm draws from about 5 mA to 0.5 mA.

Over-ride PIN code

As with all Autowatch systems, the alarm has a 5 digit emergency over-ride pin code to allow it to be disarmed without the remote.

What it lacks that you get with Spyball from Cobra:

  • Lacks battery backup siren
  • No pager output (can’t connect to GPS tracker)
  • Lacks waterproof remote

Obsessive Rating: Good immobiliser option, but keep the remote dry!

Spyball from Cobra would be my recommendation if you want more then just a good immobiliser.

  • 2 Point Engine Immobiliser
  • Compact housing
  • Built-in Siren (None battery back-up)
  • Tilt/shock sensor
  • Seat or lid tamper input
  • 2 one button peanut remote controls
  • Red Dash Mount LED (Can be changed)

Maybe the “attack proof housing” means it’s resistant to compromise by a hammer but makes no guarantee against the screwdriver. I guess technically you’re not attacking it if you go in with a screwdriver. 🙂 Still misleading, as you say. Isn’t that a little below par for Autowatch?

I agree, Autowatch normally do better, but wait until you read up about the Mongoose MCA500. That really is a turd garnished with sprinkles!

The level of information about bike alarms in general on the net is horrific! The Autowatch NZ website list the following:

    Two circuit immobilisation
    Completely transparent operation
    Ten trillion possible code combinations
    No buttons to push
    No batteries to replace
    No code to be entered
    Attack proof housing
    Five Pin number override facility
Up to 8 transponders can be programmed
    Excellent deactivation range
    All black wire harness

It’s looks like a cut and paste of the 573PPi transponder immobiliser spec! I’ll let them know and suggest they change it.
