Best Car Alarm NZ
Who makes the best car alarm in New Zealand?
So you’ve just done a search for “Best car alarm NZ?” and you’ve probably found some other sites telling to that the AVS S5 is the best, or maybe even the Mongoose M60G.
I’m going to suggest that you open your mind and look beyond the marketing, because I don’t recommend the so-called “big names” you usually hear about.
Why Not the Big Brands?
Here’s a real email I got (and it sums up the confusion perfectly):
The truth is, I don’t actually dislike most of the big brands. In fact, I rate many of them highly. But you’ve got to understand what a big brand really is, and whether they stand up internationally, not just in New Zealand’s small market.
Big Fish, Small Bowl Syndrome
New Zealand is a very small goldfish bowl in a very big ocean.
Ask your local car audio shop which alarm is best, and you’ll almost always hear AVS or Mongoose. The problem? You won’t see those brands sold outside of NZ and Australia.
Why? Simple: they don’t meet international standards.
They’ve just done a good job marketing themselves here in little old NZ.
And here’s the catch: most car audio shops are not alarm experts. They just sell what’s easy to get and well-branded.
There is a Huge Amount of Misinformation Thanks to AVS and Mongoose
Did you know that AVS and Mongoose are both sold through the same distributor?
It probably explains why the Star Rating System is quoted by both brands, despite being dropped back in 2012.
Marketing vs Reality
There’s a very fine line between good marketing and pure sales fluff.
AVS alarms? Mostly rebranded Rhino-Co systems.
Mongoose? Largely made in Taiwan or China and no real innovation for 25 years.
That doesn’t mean they’re useless, it just means they’re not globally recognised or tested to international benchmarks.
The Best Systems Meet International Standards
If you want proper security, look at brands that are respected worldwide and tested to rigorous standards. The ones I tend to recommend are:
Vodafone Automotive (Cobra)
Autowatch
Viper
These are sold globally, meet international standards, and are trusted by manufacturers and insurance companies alike.
Which is the Best Car Alarm in New Zealand in 2025?
Here’s the honest answer: it depends.
The “best” car alarm in NZ varies depending on:
What vehicle you own
What features you need
Your budget
That’s why I recommend treating every vehicle on a case-by-case basis. Fill in the details on my contact page and I’ll point you in the right direction.
Installation Matters Most
One last note: the installation is more important than the brand.
You can’t make a cheap alarm (or outdated over-priced well marketed alarm) good by installing it perfectly, but you can definitely ruin a top-end alarm with a poor installation.
That’s why I stress proper installation, wiring, and configuration in my reviews and recommendations.

Best Car Alarms for Car Insurance?
This get a little tricky. Both AVS and Mongoose claim that their alarms meet with AS/NZS Standards. But the standards which they quote are no longer valid.
Red Flags For Mongoose and AVS
My advice is to be cautions if you use either brand for insurance purposes.
Why do AVS and Mongoose Quote Expired Standards?
They have the power to update their websites and notify all of their dealers but have chosen not to.
I don’t know about you but I’d rather be dealing with companies that are are honest. Especially when it comes to vehicle security systems.
