4822 Remote Car Alarm

Cobra Car alarms NZ

The Vodafone Automotive 4822 Remote Car Alarm comes in 3 versions to protection the level of protection you need.

All 3 models come with two remote controls. There are both traditional analog inputs and CAN-BUS inputs so it’s super versatile.

Remote Controls

The 2-button remote comes as standard, but can be swapped for the 3 button remote if boot pop is required.

The lock button arms the alarm, a second press will turn off the ultrasonic sensors (where selected) and 3rd press will disable the tilt sensor. A 4th press will disable both sensors.

Once fully armed, the lock button can be used for car finder and panic features if programmed to be on. I normally leave these turned off unless requested otherwise.

The unlock button will disarm the alarm.

If the 3-button remote is used, then the boot button pops the boot open if the car supports this function.

4 Auxiliary Outputs

The 4288 has a big list of alarm auxiliary outputs option which I’ve listed these below.

Output options:

  • Lock
  • Unlock
  • Boot pop
  • Horn Honk
  • Pager
  • Ground When Armed
  • Additional LED
  • Window Closure (may require extra parts)
  • OBD Protection
  • Crank Lock
  • Speaker Siren

Sadly these don’t stretch far. 2 of these outputs will be used to trigger the central locking. If you have boot pop too, then that only leaves one spare which will probably be needed for the Horn Honk. I think that Vodafone Automotive has missed an opportunity here, what’s the point in having all of these options if you can’t use them?

In fairness, you won’t need the Crank Lock output as this is already included with the alarm. OBD Protection is really aimed at cars with factory remotes, you can remove those options from the list.

However there are some tricks I can use to get more of these features to work. The Horn Honk and Pager output can both be achieved using just the one output.

I can use a Lock/Unlock generator such as the DEI 452T that uses the Ground When Armed output which frees up another option.

Essential Intrusion Alert Protection

The 4822 – Remote Alarm comes with a good quality stainless steel bonnet switch.

There are the usual inputs for the doors, boot and bonnet, plus another sensor input in addition to the Level Sensor and optional ultrasonic sensors. Speaking of door inputs, there are 2 of them, the first one, I will probably never use because it generates an unlock pulse to the central locking every time the door is opened. I find this really annoying, I know I’m not the only person who thinks it is unneccessay. I understand it’s considered a safety feature, but please give me a programming option to turn it off! My fix is simply to use the other door input wire.

The good news, is that all inputs can be configured for high or low input. This was not offered on the  old AK4698 or the AK4138. It’s a welcomed improvement which makes installation easier. The 4822 can also detect door opening via CAN-BUS on selected models.

If the alarm gets triggered it will honk the car’s original horn for 30 seconds in synchronization with the hazard lights to warn of an intrusion..

Level Sensor

Level Sensor comes as standard

Tilt Sensor Included as standard

All versions of the 4822 include a built-in level sensor. This is programmed when the alarm is installed.

When the alarm is first armed, it notes the angle that the vehicle is parked at.

The angle of detection can be adjusted at time of installation. I normally set it for 1.1°

The trigger angle can be programmed for either 0.9°, 1.1° or 1.3°

Crank Immobiliser

 Starter Immobiliser

The alarm includes a crank immobiliser which is activated as soon as the alarm is armed. It’s only a lower current one, but an additional relay can be added if the starter is high current.

How the Crank Immobiliser works

The Immobiliser will prevent the car from starting whilst the alarm is armed. Once the alarm is disarmed the car will start as per normal.

If an ADR card is added to the alarm (Included with the 4822 Ultimate), the immobiliser remains on until the ADR card is presented.

LED - Control Panel

LED – Control Panel – With PIN Code Over-Ride

The LED Control Panel does much more than simply flash the LED warning light to show that the alarm is armed.

It has a built in button which allows you to quickly enter your emergency PIN code should you need to disarm the alarm. This is really handy if you lose your remote control, or the battery has gone flat .

All alarms come with a random pre-coded PIN number, but the number can be customised to one you’ll remember.

More details about the Vodafone Automotive PIN Code over-ride can be found here.

4822 Ultrasonic sensors

Ultrasonic Movement Sensors

The 4822 – Enhanced Remote alarm has ultrasonic movement sensors to protect the cabin of the vehicle. The sensors come in 2 versions and 2 colours to match the vehicle interior whilst detecting any movement inside the vehicle.

The sensors can be turned off using the remote control if you wish to leave a window open.

5375 Wired Battery Back-up Siren

5375 Water proof car alarm siren
5375 Waterproof Digital Battery Siren

The 5375 Siren is IPX7 rated. This means it can be submerged in water at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes. It’s also really small so can be hidden in tight spots that are hard to access.

Despite the lack of size, it’s still super loud and horribly attention-grabbing and shrill.

It comes with a wiring loom that is over 4.5 meters long. As an installer, I love this. Far too many alarms skimp on cables to cut costs.

The 5375 is a proper digital battery back-up siren. It communicates with the alarm via a data wire, which means both the siren and the alarm will trigger if the cables are tampered with whilst it is armed. Being a real data siren, it has no override key. As a smart siren, it allows the vehicle battery to be disconnected when the alarm is disarmed.

There is the option to swap it for the wireless 5365 siren, or to run both together.

More details about the 5375 siren can be found here.

Features:

  • 2 Remote Controls
  • Horn honk & Hazard flash
  • Built in Tilt Sensor
  • LED Control panel
  • Ultrasonic Internal Movement Sensors
  • Digital Battery Siren (5365 or 5375)
  • Crank Immobiliser

Vodafone Automotive 8509 Immobiliser

Alarm and Immobiliser

The 4822 – Ultimate Remote Alarm/Immobiliser should be viewed as 2 separate systems, packed together. The remote control arms and disarm the alarm, but the immobiliser only disarms when the ADR card is present. The ADR Card transmits every 3 seconds and will simply disarm the immobiliser when in range.

While technically the alarm detects the ADR Card, I still think of the alarm and immobiliser as independent systems. The 8509 immobiliser cannot function unless it is married to the alarm.

8509 Immobiliser – Hack Proof and Attack Proof

The 8509 Immobiliser connects to the 4822 via a data wire. It can only be paired to the alarm once, in other words if the alarm module was swapped the 8509 would not communicate with it. It’s also small and sealed which means it’s easy to hide and can’t be opened up and bypassed.

ADR Cards -Automatic Driver Recognition

ADR Cards add another layer of protection. Without the ADR card the vehicle will not start.  Even it the keys and remote are stolen.

The ADR card should be kept separate to the vehicle keys/remote. Once the ADR card is in range it will allow the vehicle to to start as per normal.

What happens if my ADR card stops working?

If you misplace your ADR card, or the battery is flat, then the alarm can be disarmed using the PIN Code Override.

Passive Immobiliser

The immobiliser activates after 55 seconds after the ignition has been turned off. It disarms when the alarm is disarmed and the ADR is present.

Features:

  • 2 Remote Controls
  • 2 ADR Cards
  • Horn honk & Hazard flash
  • Built in Tilt Sensor
  • LED Control panel
  • Ultrasonic Internal Movement Sensors
  • Digital Battery Siren (5365 or 5375)
  • Crank Immobiliser
