My first CAN-BUS alarm install was well over 10 years ago when I still lived in the UK (I’ve lived in NZ since June 2005) and it was on a Volkswagen Golf. The alarm was a Cobra AK4908. Things have since moved on and we now have the excellent Cobra AK4615 with its wireless siren and the option of having a Cobra remote.
Even back then I was impressed at how well the system functioned although I had little understanding of how it actually worked, let alone have an appreciation of how good CAN-BUS systems in VW’s (and other German cars in general) actually were.
Of course, it’s all well and good having a great CAN-BUS platform but if the alarm does not map all the useful available information it’s wasted! This is one of the reasons why I love Cobra over most of the other brands out there:
The install above is one I did last year, this one on a MK5 GTi which has black interior trim. The grey ultrasonics(which look mint in about 90% of cars) look rather naff when placed on black so I sprayed them to match.
Then there is the LED over-ride system which is simple and super easy to use. It looks good in the Golf too.
