NZSA Star rated alarms and Immobilisers are only valid if installed by a NZSA installer. In other words if you have a 3 Star, 4 Star or 5 Star alarm installed by an individual who is not NZSA certified then you run the risk of having an insurance claim dishonoured should your car be stolen! (Technically this also applies to 1 Star and 2 Star systems but they really aren’t worth bothering with!)
How can you be sure that your installer is NZSA certified?
First of all you should check by looking on the NZSA Website. On the left hand side of the home page use the drop down bar and select Vehicle Alarm Installers.
Next select the area which you are located or enter the company name. All NZSA certified installers are on the list.
NZSA Certified Installers Carry a Photo ID Badge
Ask to see the Installer ID badge, they won’t take offence (even if the Photo is a shocker!) If they make an excuse then don’t let them work on your car!
Company’s that try and cheat the system!
There are a number of company’s who try to cheat the system by having a director named as member of the NZSA. It is not enough for a company to be registered, the individual Installer working on your car needs to be qualified and registered.
Double check that your Installer is NZSA registered.
Don’t be fooled by some of the big franchise alarm suppliers, they may have the NZSA logo on their website but that does not mean that the Installer they use will be. Again ask for the ID badge and check out the NZSA website.
Whilst there is no guarantee that you’ll get a brilliant install by using a NZSA installer you can at least take comfort in knowing that they have a basic level of professionalism and competence.
Some of the requirements for NZSA Installers.
Passed Police record check
Have full liability Insurance to work on your vehicle
Have passed a basic written exam.
